Is it just me, or is it a little more difficult to feel merry and bright this holiday season? So much sadness and tragedy is going on in the world. How does one find peace among daily mass shootings, poverty, inequality, weather patterns exacerbating the plight of people already barely hanging in there... it feels like too much. Going along with the shopping and the eating and the merrymaking in the face of a world that feels like it's falling apart? It's easy to feel small and helpless.
When the "macro" state of this planet becomes so heavy that we can barely move, the only thing I know to do is to take my compassion and heartache to the "micro" level. What are the things around us that we can control or influence? Perhaps signing a local petition, or donating to an agency with a mission we believe in - that might be one way to take action. Sure, it doesn't feel like enough, I'm not sure anything will, but it's something. And what about using every moment that we can to embody this peace that we wish for the world? That may mean holding your tongue at a family dinner, rather than engaging in an argument. Or maybe it means doing something kind for a stranger for no reason at all. In the midst of the daily depressing media coverage wouldn't it be wonderful to exude respect and gratitude to everyone in your life and those you encounter? I know... tis the season anyway and all, but I think most of us can use an extra dose of loving kindness right about now. And maybe it will cause a ripple effect large enough to keep us moving in the direction of change and hope.
This time of year already presents it's own challenges for many people, regardless of the state of the world. If you find that planet problems + personal problems = too much to handle on your own, please reach out for help. Call a friend or loved one you can talk to, or seek out a therapist to provide extra support. Being a human is tough and the one thing no one should have to do is endure all of it alone <3
