A word on wellness:
It's nearly (officially) summer! As many of us begin counting down to adventures (or planning them) I want to put in a plug for seeking out the new and the truly awe inspiring. This could mean taking a plane, train or automobile to a destination quite near or far. Is there a hiking trail you've been meaning to check out? Rivers are finally flowing again, what about visiting one? Traveling and/or adventuring in my own Northern California back yard always proves to be so good for my soul. Truth be told, I can often forget this during the more hectic times of year. Something about summer always helps me remember to prioritize. Being reminded that there are trees that are THOUSANDS of years old, that I am one of billions of humans, that my struggles are not unique, that I am VERY fortunate, that there are still moments that can make me marvel at something like a child... these experiences create a sense of peace, contentment and gratitude that I can take home with me. Let's challenge each other to put away the phones, grab a friend - and maybe a snack - and head out with the objective of letting this planet, and the people on it, blow our minds!
Something to Read:
Speaking of ... I loved this NY Times article on why we experience awe. The article cites studies that link awe (and experiencing it regularly) to generosity, altruism and humility.

How is therapy different than just talking to my friends?
This is a biggie. I often have friends joke with me about me being their therapist, or I hear people saying they don’t need a therapist because they have their friends. Friends are an essential part of your support system and you do need them. As a therapist I am always encouraged to hear that people have and use this resource. However, they aren’t going to be able to function in your life the same way a therapist does, and this is precisely because they’re IN your life. What you do and what you’re going through effects them. They also have expectations of you (if you have a balanced, give and take friendship) that a therapist doesn’t. So while many friends are amazingly objective, they can’t really be, because they love you. And also, people (even the most open ones) eventually tell their therapist things they don’t tell their friends - TRUST ME. More FAQ's this way!
City Surf Project is an amazing organization with a mission to expose underserved youth from low-income communities to surfing. There are many life skills and growth opportunities embedded in the sport of surfing, and City Surf Project doesn't wantanyone left out of that experience! Their mission definitely combines two things that are near and dear to my heart -- the beach and the youth of this city... This organization is always in need of donations and volunteers if you should feel so inclined.
